London Collections: Men – Topman Design Spring/Summer 2014 Show.

The Topman Design show at London Collections was not one to be missed. Being one of the first shows to kick start the three day Menswear event, the Topman show did exactly that. The biannual event devoted purely to menswear brings attention to British brands as well as emerging talent, giving menswear the attention it deserves. I went along to the Topman Design show to see what they had to offer for Spring/Summer 14, starting with a lovely pre-show breakfast..

Pre-Show Breakfast at The Old Crown.

First was the Pre-show breakfast at The Old Crown pub, a beautiful location with a classic Victorian style. Here I met some members of the Topman Generation team, who explained the concept of holding the pre show at The Old Crown, and how this ties in well with the brand.

Onto the show, with floral embroidery contrasting against metallic silks, combined with high waists and detailed neck lines, there was a strong western influence through out the collection. The uniformity of shirts and relaxed wide-legged trousers were made more interesting with metallic silver and burgundy tones, building an overall aesthetically stimulating colour palette.

Some pieces such as the bomber were given a mod western twist in place of the classic waistcoat, but this only gave the collection more interest and wear-ability. Details such as metallic brogues and retro gun-metal sunglasses gave the collection a real futuristic feel with textured fringe-focused hairstyles adding an edge. The Front row featured the likes of David Gandy, Tinie Tempah and Mr Hudson, with techno country-western music fitting the show perfectly and giving an overall theme of the merged modern cowboy persona.

Overall the collection surprised yet impressed me, although Topman never fails to re-work the past into current, diverse designs. Last seasons block colours seem a long way from the sleeker, more glamorous pieces in the new collection, that will have every male lusting after the latest slinky cowboy shirt to adorn their backs.
